It is also the medication I run prophylactically on nearly every wet-shipped fish that comes through quarantine, because monogenean flukes travel on the fish rather than in the water, and they do not announce themselves until the population is already large enough to do damage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eWhat it actually does\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePraziquantel works on calcium. Flatworms — flukes, tapeworms, turbellarians — regulate calcium across the tegument, the living outer skin they also use to absorb nutrients and shrug off immune attack. Praziquantel throws that regulation wide open: calcium floods in, the parasite's musculature locks into sustained contraction, and the tegument blisters and vacuolizes. A paralyzed fluke cannot keep its grip on a gill filament, and a blistered one can no longer hide from the fish's own immune system. That is why it works quickly, and why it does not harm the fish — vertebrates do not share the target.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is also why your biological filter never notices. This is not an antibiotic; nitrifying bacteria have no flatworm neuromuscular junction to disrupt. You can treat a cycled tank without watching ammonia climb three days later.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eWhat it treats — and what it will not\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eTreats:\u003c\/strong\u003e gill and skin flukes (monogeneans), tapeworms, and flatworms and turbellarians in both freshwater and marine systems.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eWill not touch:\u003c\/strong\u003e ich or velvet, or any other ciliated protozoan — those are single-celled, not flatworms, and praziquantel has nothing to grab hold of. It also will not clear nematodes such as Camallanus; that is levamisole's job, and it lives in a different bottle — \u003ca href=\"\/products\/fritz-expel-p-antiparasitic-fish-treatment\"\u003eFritz Expel-P\u003c\/a\u003e. A fish that is scratching \u003cem\u003eand\u003c\/em\u003e covered in white spots has two problems, and this solves one of them.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eDosing, straight off the label\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eAquarium:\u003c\/strong\u003e 1 teaspoon per 20 gallons, or 1 fl oz per 120 gallons — a 2.5 mg\/L concentration.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003ePond:\u003c\/strong\u003e 1 teaspoon per 32 gallons, or 1 fl oz per 200 gallons.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eCourse:\u003c\/strong\u003e a single treatment held 5–7 days is normally sufficient. Repeat no more often than once every 3 to 5 days.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eBefore you dose:\u003c\/strong\u003e shake the bottle hard, pull activated carbon, and shut down the protein skimmer and UV. Leave the rest of your filtration running. Expect some temporary foaming — it passes.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eContents run under 5% praziquantel by weight in oxybispropanol, an inert solubilizing agent, which is the reason this pours and disperses instead of clumping the way powdered praziquantel does in hard water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eThe one honest caveat\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is exactly one contraindication on the label worth repeating: do not use it in a marine system where you are deliberately culturing Polycladida flatworms. If that is you, you already know it.
