Electric Blue Crayfish

Electric Blue Crayfish (Procambarus alleni) carry a saturated blue coloring that has nothing to do with diet or water chemistry and everything to do with selective breeding of a natural color morph native to Florida. In the wild, P. alleni inhabits slow-moving freshwater ditches, swamps, and wetlands across north-central Florida — highly adaptable to a range of conditions, which translates directly to the hardiness they're known for in captivity.

They're omnivorous and opportunistic in the way all crayfish are: they'll forage through substrate, excavate around plant roots, relocate rocks and décor on a whim, and consume any plant softer than a robust stem species. Build the aquascape with that in mind — driftwood, river rock, and hardy plants like Anubias and Java fern attached to hardscape (not planted in substrate they can uproot) will survive their rearranging. Soft-stemmed or carpet plants won't.

Territorial toward their own kind and best kept singly or in a large, heavily structured tank with clear visual barriers between individuals. Like all crayfish, they periodically molt their entire exoskeleton to grow — during and immediately after molt they're soft, vulnerable, and will hide. Provide caves and don't remove the shed shell; they eat it to recover calcium.

Husbandry note: Keep calcium and mineral content adequate in the water — crayfish in consistently soft, ion-poor water develop thin shells and molt poorly. Crushed coral in the filter or a mineral supplement during molt periods helps significantly.
