Boyd Chemi-Pure — The Original Carbon & Resin Blend

This is the media that has been in continuous production since 1961, and it is still in my sumps. Chemi-Pure predates most of what gets sold as "advanced filtration" today, and it has outlasted almost all of it for a simple reason: it is not one thing. It is a blended media that handles organics, metals, and pH drift in a single bag, which means one pouch does the work three separate reactors are usually sold to do.

What is actually in the bag

Premium activated carbon does the bulk of the work — it pulls dissolved organic compounds, phenols, and the yellowing tannins that make water look tired before you consciously notice it. Alongside the carbon sit ion-exchange resins, and those are the part people overlook. Resins grab what carbon cannot: dissolved heavy metals, copper, and ammonia that slips through as a system swings. The blend also buffers, holding pH steadier than carbon alone would.

The practical result is water that stays optically clear and chemically boring. Boring is the goal. A tank that never spikes and never yellows is a tank whose inhabitants are spending their energy on growth and color instead of on coping.

How I actually use it

• Rinse first. Run tap or tank water through the bag until it runs clear. Carbon dust is harmless but it will cloud a display for a day and irritate gills on the way through.
• Place it in flow. A canister basket, a media chamber, or laid in the sump where water is actually moving through it, not past it. Media sitting in dead water is decoration.
• Coverage: the 5 oz treats roughly 35 gallons, the 10 oz roughly 75 gallons, and the Grande 40 oz is for the systems where you would otherwise be stacking four bags.
• Replace every 4 months. Carbon exhausts quietly — it does not announce itself, it just stops working while continuing to look exactly the same.

The honest caveat

Chemi-Pure Original is a general-purpose blend, and general-purpose means it does not specialize. If your problem is specifically phosphate, you want Chemi-Pure Elite, which adds ferric oxide hydroxide to bind it. If you are running a planted freshwater tank and dosing ferts, the Original will strip some of what you just paid for — Chemi-Pure Green exists for exactly that reason. On a reef, Chemi-Pure Blue is the gentler choice.

Also worth saying plainly: pull it before you medicate. Carbon does not care that the compound in the water is one you added on purpose. It will strip a treatment out of the water column just as efficiently as it strips waste, and you will spend the money without getting the dose.
